The Regeneron STS 2022 Top 300 Scholars are sparkling in STEM fields

Despite working and being challenged in their education through another year of the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s top 300 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars haven’t let uncertainty dim their sparkle. The next generation of promising young scientists, engineers and mathematicians were chosen from a pool of 1,804 applicants and represent 37 states and three countries. Not only do their interests span across STEM fields, but each scholar has passions outside of their research areas. We’re excited to share the fun and distinctive facts that make this cohort shine.

  • 278 out of 300 (~92%!) scholars speak a language in addition to English. This includes Mandarin, Spanish, Hindi and Russian.

  • After seeing the Milky Way on camping trips, one scholar learned astrophotography and captures the night sky with his camera.
  • Another scholar can read and write upside down! Interested in typography from a young age, it’s what originally got them interested in reading.
  • Scholars participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities like athletics, volunteer work and music.

  • A Boba tea enthusiast, one scholar creates his own tea flavors, reviews Boba tea shops and let his friends know about the latest tea deals. He even has a blog dedicated to Boba!
  • These scholars like to work with their hands. Whether it’s carpentry or bookbinding, many of these students are bringing their creativity to life through a variety of crafts.
  • Taking care of one’s mental health is more important than ever. One scholar acted by creating a Discord server in May of 2020, offering peer support to teenagers facing mental health struggles. By March of 2021 the community had 400 members who connected to check in with each other.
  • This year’s research topics spanned 19 categories, with the most popular area being computational biology, then behavior and social sciences followed by medicine and health.

  • Musical talent is a common skill in this cohort. From creating and playing music to producing and publishing songs on Spotify and YouTube to building instruments and performing the entirety of ‘Despacito’ on an oboe, these scholars can do it all!
  • 一位学者没有让COVID-19阻止他真纪ng a short film. He wrote, filmed, scored and acted as every character in his “would-be blockbuster.”

Stay tuned for the finalist’s announcement on January 20, at noon ET, when 40 of the 300 scholars will be named Regeneron STS 2022 finalists.
